The United States ecosystem is diverse, with areas dense with water cover and arid deserts and prairies. A new chart from Staten Island Yachts demonstrates this perfectly with a ranking of states by how much of the area is water-covered. Water makes up 7% of the United States’ total area. Many of the most water-abundant states are on the East Coast, with Connecticut, Florida, New York, and Rhode Island ranking highly. But the most water-dense state is Michigan, bordered by four Great Lakes and speckled with inland lakes.
The driest states are New Mexico, Arizona, Colorado, and Kansas. These states either feature vast deserts or arid dry prairie land and mountain terrain.
