helps people understand how to read and create their own family tree. The team explains that the idea of a family tree dates back to the book of Isiah, which described Jesse’s family as a “branch growing from the roots of the stump of Jesse.” The oldest family lineage belongs to Chinese philosopher Confucius. There is a record of 86 generations spanning 2,500 years.
The team’s graphic shows us how generations are delineated and how to name our many great-grandparents. Cousins can be the most confusing topic along with the term “removed,” but seeing the connection of these family members to ourselves can help us understand what it means. A cousin removed is a generation above or below you and the degrees are counted out by how many generations separate you. This may sound confusing on paper, but seeing the placement on the family tree makes the concept much clearer.
