Snipers around the world are trained to hit long-distance targets with stealth and precision. These finely honed skills make them some of the best marksmen in the world. Their status is evident on a new infographic from the Sightmark team displaying data on the world’s longest sniper shots.
We can see from the chart that the longest recorded sniper kill was performed in 2023 by Viacheslav Kovalsky, a Ukrainian who made a 3,800-meter shot to hit a Russian officer during the invasion of Ukraine. Kovalsky was a 58-year-old businessman turned Security Service of Ukraine Officer. He used a spotter to help him calculate conditions, missed his first shot, but made his second.
The second-longest sniper shot was made by a Canadian soldier whose name has been withheld from public record. This 2,540-meter or 2.2-mile shot was made during the war in Iraq. The sniper was a member of an elite four-member team sent to assassinate an ISIS fighter. This task force is Canada’s most specialized and most secretive. An Australian soldier, whose name was also withheld, made the third longest shot at 2,815 meters during the War in Afghanistan in 2012.
