The landline is a prime example of a once integral piece of technology that became obsolete. A new study from Ooma shows us the percentage of homes that have a landline every decade since they emerged in the 1960s. From the infographic, we can see the peaks and valleys of landline use, as well as the states with the highest amount of landline use.
The studies show that states in the Midwest and Northeast have the highest number of landlines. Here are some of the states with the most landlines:
- Connecticut
- Iowa
- Minnesota
- Massachusetts
- Wisconsin
- Pennsylvania
- New Jersey
- Rhode Island
- Delaware
- New York
- Maryland
- Michigan
- California
- Nebraska
- New Hampshire
- Maine
Southern states had the fewest landlines and were the last to adopt the technology. Landline phones had a profound impact on society, changing how people socialized and did business. They became a status symbol, only to be replaced as mobile phone technology expanded and evolved.
