Lab diamonds are real diamonds. They are pure carbon rocks, with identical physical, chemical and optical characteristics to natural mined diamonds. The only difference is how the diamonds originate. Lab diamonds are individually cultivated in a lab and mined diamonds are created in the ground over millions of years.
Both types of diamond begin as rough diamonds, which are then cut, polished and graded according to the 4-Cs. Both types of rough diamond go through the same process to produce a valuable gemstone.
Both types of diamond go through the same certification process and a certificate is generated by a reputable international grading lab like the GIA or IGI. The report number associated with the certificate should be also lasered onto the diamond. Diamond jewellery should never be purchased for its future resale value. But, remember, the value of the diamond is in the cert. Our explainer infographic tells you all you need to know.
