The team at Student Choice decided to collect data on which college majors students are declaring and arranged their results on pie graphs. We can examine the distribution of majors each year from 2016 to 2023. The results show us a lot about how the college major landscape is shifting (and the ways it remains the same.) The biggest disruptions occur in the 3rd, 4th, and 5th ranking positions. In different years we’ve seen Education, Biology, Psychology take these places. For quite some time, Education was a popular major but after 2020, the major’s ranking dropped as teachers brought negative aspects of the job to light. Salaries for teachers aren’t competitive enough and duties and expectations are too high for today’s college majors to be as attracted to teaching as they once were. Instead, Psychology has risen to take the place of Education. Mental health jobs are more plentiful than ever before with platforms allowing for online practice options.
