The Iconic Bully Dog Breed

There are many dog breeds today that were bred with an explicit purpose. Bully breeds are the most prominent example of this. Initially created to be protective dogs used for hunting and in fighting contexts, bullies have grown beyond their initial purpose. Known now for their wrinkled faces, strong and stocky stature, and short-coats, they’re very recognizable. Bully breeds are also very diverse in temperament and looks. The Great Dane, one of the biggest dog breeds in existence, are strong, slender, and calm. Meanwhile the French Bulldog is tiny, playful, and stocky. They’re both bully breeds, but two very different breeds regardless. Pit bulls are also an interesting case as they are not actually a specific breed. Pit bulls instead are a categorization of any breed with a mix of multiple bullies.

What this means is that pit bulls aren’t actually aggressive or peaceful in nature, as they have no exact nature. Bullies, in contrast to their namesake, can actually be quite peaceful. A pit bull consisting of two peaceful bully breeds would likely have a calm temperament itself. This is just one part of why bully breeds are so popular today. They can fit any niche, big or small, protective or peaceful. It’s impossible to miss their wrinkled faces, and as 20% of the U.S. dog population, they’re not going anywhere.
