A 7.5-magnitude earthquake struck Japan's Western coast on Monday, causing significant infrastructure damage and hindering rescue efforts with cut-off roads. Despite a tsunami warning, there were no major floods reported, but the risk of aftershocks persists. The country ranks fourth globally for major earthquakes since 1990, with 98 recorded by NOAA, and holds the highest relative earthquake frequency considering its size.
Last February, Turkey and Syria experienced severe earthquakes, resulting in nearly 60,000 casualties. Turkey, known for its earthquake-prone nature, recorded 62 quakes with six having a magnitude of 7 or higher, including two on Feb. 6, 2023. Iran, also in the region, is among the most seismically active countries in the last three decades.
In Asia, China and Indonesia were the most affected with 186 and 166 earthquakes, respectively. India and the Philippines also faced significant seismic activity. In Europe, Italy is one of the most endangered regions with 23 tremors in the given time frame.
