The origins of this map can be traced back to data culled from the 2020 United States Geological Survey (USGS) Mineral Yearbook.
This thorough compilation scrupulously documents the annual output of a diverse range of gem types, diamonds, and minerals, sourced from countries worldwide. Through meticulous scrutiny of records spanning 2016 to 2020, the team painstakingly assessed production metrics, measured in kilograms, for each specific gemstone type. These data markers ultimately unveiled the primary producers within each gemstone classification. A distinct feature of this map lies in its recognition of secondary countries that play a significant role, even if not as primary producers, in the global gemstone supply.
