The Girl Scouts of the United States of America was founded by Juliette Gordon Low in 1912 after she met with Robert Baden-Powell, the founder of Scouting, in 1912. Upon returning to her home of Savannah, Georgia, she contacted a distant cousin to tell her, "I've got something for the girls of Savannah, and all of America, and all the world, and we're going to start it tonight!" What is Scouting? Also known as the Scout Movement, Scouting is a worldwide youth movement that follows the Scout method, an educational program that emphasizes practical outdoor activities such as hiking, camping, woodcraft, aquatics, sports, and backpacking. The objective of Girl Scouts is to prepare girls to advocate for themselves and cultivate compassion, courage, character, confidence, leadership, entrepreneurship, and active citizenship. As Scouts progress through these character-building challenges, they can earn badges, pins, and patches.
