Foods With the Most (and Least) Exposure to Herbicides and Pesticides

There is a growing concern over the amount of pesticides and herbicides used in the mass production of food both within the United States and abroad. Some studies have shown that herbicides, such as glyphosate (the active ingredient in Roundup), may increase the risk of cancer, especially non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma. The EPA has stated that Roundup does not cause cancer, although experts have brought their testing methods into question. In fact, the State of California disagrees with the EPA’s position so much so that they added it to its list of carcinogens in 2017. This infographic delves into the FDA’s annual Pesticide Residue Monitoring Report, which tested 2,078 human food samples for 716 kinds of pesticides, 27 acid herbicides, glyphosate, glufosinate, and the byproducts of their degradation. The results are alarming; 76.7% of domestic fruits, 59.9% of vegetables, and 52.6% of grain products were found to have pesticide or herbicide residue. You can find the most contaminated domestic and imported food products on this infographic.
