Marijuana legalization isn’t something new to American debate. California legalized medicinal marijuan in 1996, it took 7,308 days before it was recreationally legal. Today the timeframe in between these two phases has dramatically dropped. Massachusetts legalized medicinal marijuana in 2012, it was only 1,463 days before it was legal recreationally.
This is just one way to show that marijuana is not as stigmatized and demonized as it used to be. To see this effect most prominently, it’s important to look at the rates of approval. Today 90% of Americans support some form of marijuana use. This statistic, in practice, leads to 37 states legalizing medicinal marijuana, 21 of which have also legalized recreational use. Importantly, these changes have been happening locally. The national level has seen some change, such as Joe Biden’s marijuana offender pardon. Although for the most part marijuana legalization is happening slowly and only when the people demand it. CBD today sees conditional legalization in all 50 states. Many experts believe marijuana is on a similar path.
And this is the state of marijuan in modern America. There is still debate, there are still those who argue strongly against it. Although for the most part America is clearly heading towards a nation of legalization. Marijuana use, acceptance, and safety are up. Only time can tell what continued legalization will do to the country. Although it is undeniably coming.
