The Most Sleep-Deprived Places Across All 50 States of America

Sleep is so important for every aspect of health. Sleep deficiency is linked to numerous health issues such as heart disease, kidney disease, diabetes, high blood pressure, stroke, obesity, and depression. It can also cause irritability, difficulty focusing and remembering, headaches, slowed reaction times, and other unpleasant and potentially dangerous symptoms. In fact, insufficient sleep contributes to a higher chance of injury and even death in adults, teenagers, and children. As with all health factors, sleep deficiency varies across locations, communities, age groups, occupations, and more. This infographic explores the most sleep-deprived states and counties in the United States. Insufficient sleep severely impacts the southern states and Appalachia – for example, 43% of adults in West Kentucky reported an average of fewer than 7 hours of sleep each night. In McGreary County, Kentucky, 49% of adults reported insufficient sleep. Detroit and Philadelphia also suffer from sleep deprivation too, both at 45%!
