Google has added a limit to the number of files that can be
created in Drive. While the company did not officially announce this policy when
it went into effect, it has now confirmed that users will be allowed to upload
a maximum of 5 million files in Drive.
It is important to note that this limit is applicable to all users, including those who pay for extra storage. This means that a user with 2TB of storage would reach their file creating limit before running out of storage, with an average file size over 400KB. However, users are not to assume this limit for files that are shared in Drive, meaning that there can be more than 5 million files in a user’s Drive, as long as they are not just “created” by them.
A Google spokesman Ross Richendrfer revealed that the update
has been made to ensure strong performance and reliability and prevent misuse
of Google’s systems.
Some Drive users previously reported on Google’s issue
tracker site that they were barred from creating new files and mistook the cap
as a bug. The misunderstanding arose since Google had not released a warning
prior to applying the policy. According to Ross Richendrfer, users of Drive
will now start receiving notifications if they reach their file limit, and will
be prompted to contact Google support.
