Google has finally updated Google Authenticator with support
for cloud syncing for both Android and iOS devices. The platform’s latest
policy allows users to sync their two-factor authentication codes to Google
accounts. This is meant to make the process of logging into a Google account easier
when setting up a new phone or retrieving an account from another device in
case of losing a phone.
The tech giant decided to add cloud syncing to Authenticator after receiving feedback from users that suggested “complexity in dealing with lost or stolen devices that had Google Authenticator installed.” Up until now, users have had to deal with losing their ability to sign in to a service where they had set up 2FA via Authenticator, in case of losing their device.
The two-factor authentication codes in Authenticator will be
automatically backed up and restored on any new device that a user sets up. The
codes can also be manually transferred to another device without signing in to
a Google Account.
The integration of cloud syncing in Authenticator means that
users will be able to manage their Google accounts with more convenience and
enhanced security within Google’s standard measures. To reduce the chance of
malicious targeting, Authenticator has a unique password for restoring
two-factor backups, as well as the option to allow or disallow multiple devices
from being used with an account.
To access the code syncing option in Authenticator, you will need to update the app to the latest version: 6.0 on Android and 4.0 on iOS.
