Amazon Echo and Alexa, two AI devices that talk back, reminiscent of the smart homes envisioned in old cartoons. Today these are two of the most popular smart devices that exist, but they are just one of many. Smart devices solve issues, reduce prices, reduce hassle, and create a home of luxury. Smart security, for example, allows homeowners to go on vacation and to keep stock on their house. Smart heating and lighting reduces prices over the years. Consumers, especially young consumers, overwhelmingly see these as positive devices on the market.
At the same time though, these devices are expensive, some very expensive. Even for smart device owners, 51% say they are too expensive. Smart devices also aren’t building the futuristic homes of the future, at least, not yet. They tend to serve more simple purposes and solve more simple issues.
This is the interesting place smart homes lie in today. Practical, useful, but expensive and currently lacking in scope. They have a bright future, the market continually rising year after year. Although only time will tell exactly what a “smart home” will be in ten years time.
