What did you wear to your prom? That answer will dramatically vary depending on what decade your prom took place! The first written account of prom was discovered in an 1894 journal of a male Amherst college student recounting an invitation he received for a special trip to a formal dance at the neighboring all-female Smith College. At the time, “prom” was short for “promenade”, but it has evolved into its own magical, iconic experience that inspires attendees to dress their very best. Puffy sleeves, flowing cape sleeves, silky, figure-hugging gowns, full-skirted tea dresses, ruffles, lace, tulle, Victorian-era inspiration, Grecian motifs, Art Deco lines, bold pops of color, big hair, crochet, floral prints, shimmery jewel-tone fabrics, drop waists, sequins, minimalist cuts, rhinestone brooches, strapless shift dresses, animal print – all of these elements have made appearances (and often reappearances!) on the prom dance floor.
