Amazon is beginning to deliver orders by drones through the
Amazon Prime Air service. Starting the deliveries in California and Texas, the
company plans to expand the service to more regions over time.
Customers in California and Texas will be able to sign up and place their orders via Amazon Prime Air, while those living in other regions will be notified when the service is operational in their areas. Customers who place orders will receive tracking information and an estimated delivery time when the drone would drop off their package in their backyard. The deliveries will be monitored by Amazon employees.
The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) that approved
Amazon’s drone delivery service back in 2020 has announced details of two
operating areas, the College Station PADDC and Lockeford PADDC. According to
the FAA, each area is divided into four sectors. A maximum of
approximately 50 delivery flights will set off in a day and there will be up to
five operating days in a week. In addition to that, the operations will occur
during daylight hours and only one aircraft will be out for delivery at a time.
Amazon’s drones are shaped as hexagons, with six propellers
attached to the body. Reportedly, the company is currently developing improved
and safer drones after incidents of crashing were reported at the time the drone
delivery program was initiated.
