The term podcast was first introduced in the year 2004. It is
supposed to have been created by linking two words: iPod and broadcast or Portable
on demand (pod) and broadcast. The fairly new audio format has gained great
reputation quite rapidly around the globe and is assisted by the rise of digital
audio platforms like Apple Music of Spotify.
Nevertheless, the usage of podcast varies from one region to another. The latest data from the Statista Global Consumer Survey shows that half of the people surveyed in Brazil said they listen to podcasts, while it appeared that the people in South Korea were less familiar with this format. Only 15 percent of these people said that they listened to podcasts at least occasionally.
When surveyed in Spain, the podcasts appeared quite a popular
activity there. 34 percent of Spaniards said they access this type of content
occasionally, while 3 percent said they were frequent listeners tuning into
podcasts for 11 hours or more every week. In European region, most podcast
listeners reside in Sweden. Consumption of podcasts was somewhat lower in the
U.S. at 29 percent of podcast listeners.
