The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) has recently issued a ban on some of China’s leading surveillance and telecom services, including Huawei, ZTE Corp, Dahua, Hytera, and Hikvision among others, that can no longer sell their telecom and video surveillance equipment the US.
While many are deeming the FCC’s decision as controversial, the agency has claimed that the attempts are in the country’s best interests in terms of national security.
In the issued report, the FCC further highlights several
points explaining the importance of protecting the US citizens from the growing
potential threats from insecure telecom services from China.
In the past few years, both intelligence agencies and
experts have voiced their concerns on how the Chinese government may be using
Chinese products to target and manipulate the US citizens’ data. The currently
popular Chinese-owned social media app TikTok was also banned in the US during Donald
Trump’s reign for the same reason.
