As part of its latest technological advancement, Meta has
announced a new AI model that is part of the strategy game Diplomacy. The AI,
named CICERO, is capable of using strategic reasoning and implementing it to
negotiate and cooperate with people and form alliances, and is the first AI
with these capabilities, as per Meta.
“Diplomacy has been viewed as a nearly impossible challenge in AI because it requires players to understand people’s motivations and perspectives, make complex plans and adjust strategies, and use language to convince people to form alliances,” explains Meta. This suggests that Meta has been successful in overcoming the challenge relatively faster than people would’ve imagined.
Meta further adds that CICERO’s technology is applicable beyond
the game as well. For instance, it would be relevant in any scenario where
long-term conversations are required instead of simple responses to questions that
are asked to the AI.
While these far-fetched innovations sound impressive, things
could easily get out of hand with an AI that can read minds and hold conversations.
In a recent news, an AI researcher was accused of creating a virtual clone of
his ex-girlfriend by training the AI on the woman’s voice, texts, and even private
videos.
Cases like this suggest that in a world where people can easily
cross moral and ethical boundaries, it isn’t hard to expect the misuse of AI
for personal gains and pleasure at the expense of others’ privacy and consent. While
technological advancements are gradually changing the way people interact in
the modern world, this is happening for both the best and the worst.
