Twitter has announced that it is increasing the price of the
monthly subscription of Twitter Blue from $2.99 to $4.99 in the US. The same
price difference would be applied in all the other regions as well. The company
further added that subscribers would be notified 30 days prior to when the
change in price goes into effect.
Twitter is apparently cutting its old subscribers some slack, as they will be spared the additional charges till before October.
You might expect that Twitter Blue is being updated with new
features, which is possibly accounting for the rise in the fee, but unfortunately, that is not the case. What’s more unfortunate is that Twitter Blue isn’t as
popular of a feature on Twitter to begin with. Twitter’s latest performance
report shows a decrease of 36% for the revenue that the company generated from
its ‘subscriptions and other’ sources.
Given that Twitter is about to face some significant legal charges
from its upcoming court battle with Elon Musk, it could be that the company is looking
for ways to make money and increasing Twitter Blue’s subscription fee is one of
them. However, the move might not really profit Twitter and could even result
in loss of current subscribers.
