While the United States didn’t officially become an independent nation until 1776 when the Declaration of Independence was signed, settlers founded many businesses that are still around today. From farms to taverns and hotels, many of these businesses were established in the 1600s.

Topping the list of oldest companies is Shirley Plantation, a farm in Charles City, VA. It dates back to 1613 and has been in operation since 1648. The plantation was named as a National Historic Landmark in 1970. Next on the list is Tuttle’s Red Barn in New Hampshire. This Dover-based farm has been operating since 1632. The third oldest business in America is Field View Farm in Orange, CT, which has been in operation since 1639. It has been in the Hine family for more than 12 generations.
