Snapchat
has launched a new Lens called the ASL Alphabet Lens, which is dedicated to
raising awareness and usage of sign language. It offers recognition
of the American Sign Language (ASL) gestures along with their translation in
the app. Snapchat has developed the new lens as a result of a collaboration with
SignAll.
Using the ASL Alphabet Lens can help Snapchatters learn sign
language via various games and exercises. The lens uses the latest hand-tracking
technology that Snapchat has previously used for other similar Lenses as well.
Promoting sign language through an AI Lens is a smart way of
encouraging people, especially the young generation that is more drawn to apps
like Snapchat, to learn basics of sign language and play their part in increasing
inclusion of people with hearing and speech impairments.
“We believe AR can help evolve the way we communicate. We
look forward to learning more from our community as we strive to continuously
improve experiences for everyone on Snapchat,” says the social media company.
