Coal has been widely used for energy since the 1880's. Coal is also the worst fossil fuel in terms of air pollution. The air in China and India is some of the most polluted air in the world. Over four thousand people die per day from complications due to the air pollution in China. Looking at this map of cities with the highest coal usage from solarpower.guide you can see that China and India both use coal for over 50% of their energy production. The map shows the world average of coal usage to be right around %27 percent. Getting the countries above that to lower their coal usage and switch to a renewable energy source would help cut down the planets air pollution problem greatly.
The United States is 12th on the list with 9,573 coal generated kilowatts per capita however that only comes to 12.17 percent of our total primary energy per capita which is at least less than the average.
