TikTok became the most downloaded app on Christmas Day this
year and is ahead of rival apps Instagram and Facebook. The platform’s growth
momentum is constantly rising, and it looks like it will do just as well, or
perhaps better, in 2022 too.
CapCut, which is TikTok’s editing app, also made it among
the top 10 most downloaded apps, highlighting further popularity of TikTok. Other
apps that gained or maintained popularity this year include Snapchat and eCommerce
app Shopee.
Additionally, download charts based on regions show that Oculus was the most downloaded app in the US on Christmas Day. It makes sense as new Oculus VR headsets were exchanged as Christmas presents among people this year. Mark Zuckerberg has already envisioned the future of Meta in the form of Virtual Reality. It is now evident that Meta has started to own the VR space with increased take-ups of its VR headsets.
Another app that has become significantly popular in the US
is gaming app Roblox, which is of great interest among young gamers. Roblox
has not just been successful in providing a good gaming experience to its users,
but has also helped to connect users in the time of the pandemic, when
face-to-face interactions were not possible. Roblox has therefore exceled as a
social platform as well. Moreover, Roblox was the top game for consumer spend
on Christmas Day globally, as a variety of character skins and
digital products can be bought in the game.
These download charts indicate the future of digital connection,
with social and gaming platforms offering tools that connect into the larger
metaverse structure.
