Back in November 2020, Twitter launched a new feature of Fleet's – Instagram-like disappearing stories. Unfortunately, the Fleets were not as of success as the company expected.
Since it was inspired by the most widely used stories on Snapchat and Instagram, Twitter expected a similar response by Fleets usage. but, in the eight months, the company saw a disappointing usage and hence decided to take the feature down.
The company plans to shut down the feature from August 3rd and since then, the users will be able to utilize another recently rolled out feature Spaces – live audio chat rooms on the platform.
Another reason that provoked the company to axe Fleets is Twitter’s struggle to get its new users to post tweets. What the company has noticed is that the new users don’t post their own tweets regularly instead, consume other users’ tweets.
Twitter’s Vice President of Product, Ilya Brown said in a statement that, “We hoped Fleets would help more people feel comfortable joining the conversation on Twitter.” He further added, “But, in the time since we introduced Fleets to everyone, we haven’t seen an increase in the number of new people joining the conversation with Fleets like we hoped.”
Shutting down this feature is surely sudden since it was rolled out just 8 months ago. Moreover, the company worked on the Fleets a lot in these eight months by introducing ads and stickers to it. Despite these additional updates, Fleets didn’t perform as expected by the company.
