TikTok once again made it to headlines after hitting 3 billion downloads on iOS and Android devices all around the world. Despite all the controversies concerning data privacy issues, the short-video entertainment app becomes the world’s first non-Facebook app to reach such a huge number of downloads.
According to the data of Sensor Tower Store Intelligence, in the first half of 2021, TikTok and its Chinese iOS version known as Douyin became the world’s most downloaded non-gaming and highest-grossing application.
In 2021, TikTok’s first-time downloads increased by 2 percent as compared to the 4th quarter to the 1st quarter of 2021. However, the number of downloads saw another 16 percent surge from Q1 to the Q2 of 2021 – hitting 205.4 million downloads.
The company has had rough times as well when the downloads declined by 38 percent (619 million) year-over-year in the Q1 of 2020. This terrible decline was due to the removal of the TikTok application from iOS devices in India.
But now, the app has become the first non-Facebook and fifth non-gaming application that has been downloaded over 3 billion times. The other four non-gaming applications with more than 3 billion downloads include Facebook, Messenger, WhatsApp, and Instagram.
