What was your first car in high school? Was it hand-me-down from your parents or were you one of the cool kids that got the popular stuff for that year? I for one got my mom's old 1990s Toyota but my best friend was gifted a cute white new Camry complete with a red bow and killer sound system on her 18th birthday. We drove that around everywhere with the windows down blasting Britney Spears with our Dunkin' Donuts ice coffees. I didn't realize how 'basic' we were back then. It seemed every student drove a Toyota of some sort. I thought maybe it was because they last forever but after stumbling upon this chart from the team behind Alans Metal Carports, it shows why Toyota has dominated the people's choice of car brand through the years. The graphic shows the best-selling car model every year since 1978. In the early years the Oldsmobile cutlass was the popular choice. Then Ford came along in 1982 and sold 337,667 Escorts. The next year it was Chevrolet's turn with the popular Cavalier. The Honda Accord had a good run for a couple years from 89 to 91. The Ford Taurus then had three years of being the most popular car model until the Toyota Camry came along and dominated almost exclusively from 97 to 2020.
