In some cases, many technologies start to decline before their actual expiration date whereas, some stay way long after being discontinued. Windows 7 is an incredible example of the technologies that live longer than their expiration date. In January 2020, Microsoft officially ended its support for Windows, which left a vast number of users saddened as they feel the most comfortable with Windows 7. As a matter of fact, the popularity of Windows 7 after one year of having the support ended remains the same.
Before Windows 7, Windows XP was the widely used operating system that ran on millions of machines. Despite the security threats Windows 7 has received, millions of users chose not to upgrade the operating system.
The infographic reveals the global market share of desktop operating systems, and according to it, in December 2020, Windows 7 still managed to keep up the market share by about 13.8 percent. In December 2019, Windows 7 market share was seven points up, i.e., 20.8 percent. However, the data to create the infographic was collected from various web browsers that excluded several other machines (as in ATMs) where Windows 7 is in use. Hence the actual number of machines currently running on Windows 7 is not included in the sample chart.
Since a lot of machines would now require newer hardware in order to run Windows 10 on it still, Windows 7 will be people’s favorite for a few more years.
