For the fifth straight year, the list was topped by the National Football League's Dallas Cowboys, which are valued at $5.5 billion. It was back in 1989 that Jerry Jones purchases the NFL's Dallas Cowboys for $150 million, and now over the past 31 years, he has seen the franchise grow in value by 3,566.66%.

The majority of the list is comprised of teams from the NFL, as 25 of the 40 (65.5%) franchises featured professional football teams. The New York Yankees are the 2nd most valuable franchise in all of professional sports at $5 billion, and the most valuable franchise from the National Basketball Association (NBA) is the New York Knicks ($4.6 billion). Of the 40 franchises listed, all are from the NFL, NBA, and MLB, with none representing the National Hockey League (NHL).
