On Tuesday, Twitter announced that it would shut down the Periscope streaming application that it acquired in 2015. The company is likely to discontinue Periscope's applications in March 2021; however, a live streaming offer will be available on Twitter through its Live feature within the app. According to Twitter, Periscope entered an unsustainable maintenance-mode state due to the decline of usage over the years and increased support costs.
While Periscope will be operational until March 2021, the company is blocking all the new signups on the platforms with the latest software updates, whereas; the existing users will be able to download or archive all the data and video they have on Periscope. All the broadcasters who were given tips by their followers will be given the time till April 30th, 2021, to cash out their tips.
The majority of the core features of Periscope have already been integrated into Twitter's Live feature. The company will remove Periscope from all app stores in March. With the shutdown of Periscope as a separate live streaming application, the company will now be able to focus more on the existing Live feature and enhance it in every way possible.
