Reddit just acquired video-creating platform Dubsmash, whose
tools will be integrated into Reddit as Reddit’s own video-editing tools are
limited. Dubsmash will, however, continue functioning as an individual platform
as well.
Dubsmash is known to be the popular video app TikTok’s rival app, and its share of US’ short-form video market ranks second after TikTok. Moreover, videos on the platform are reported to be viewed over a billion times per month and the platform’s daily active users make up 30% of its total user population. On the other hand, Reddit has 52 million daily active users on its platform.
While explaining the reasons behind forming the deal with
Dubsmash, Reddit revealed one to be Dubsmash’s diverse user base. “Dubsmash
provides a welcoming platform for creators and users who are under-represented
in social media,” the company said.
Reddit had also announced earlier this year that it would be
taking action against hate speech on its platform, after protests against the
company took place and one of the co-founders of the company resigned.
