A wireless project funded by the European Union is being led by Nokia Oyj for laying the foundation of 6G, a new generation of mobile technology. The project group includes wireless gearmaking-peer Ericsson AB, mobile carriers Orange SA and Telefonica SA, and tech companies Intel Corp. and Siemens AG. University of Oulu and University of Pisa are also part of the group.
The preparations of introducing 6G to the world have already begun, while 5G network deployment is still in its initial phase with 100 wireless carriers around the world offering the service in limited areas.
The Nokia-led 6G project is called Hexa-X, while other alliances have also been formed in the U.S. Other than that, The Chinese government is also funding a 6G development group.
The technology of 6G is expected to deliver advanced connectivity with its super high-frequency terahertz airwaves. Soon, the world will be experiencing the integration of technology in the human mind and brain, and real-time holographic imaging.
Nokia’s head of North American standardization, Devaki Chandramouli, is one of the leading engineers in the 6G development with the Next G Alliance. She described three main objectives that she wants to establish: first, developing the vision, road map and timeline; second, creating a timeline for the technology direction; and last, facilitating the interaction with U.S. government agencies to fund the research and provide the input for the technology development.
