According to Instagram, 1 million memes are shared on a
daily by users on its platform. In a blog post, the company said that memes are
what brought people closer together this year, thanks to creators who were
able to bring smiles to our faces in the stressful time of the pandemic.
Instagram further shared its 5 top-most trending memes that
have been shared on its platform in this past year. These included the meme made
by Dolly Parton which was a combination of 4 of her photographs in different
attires and poses, from her 74th birthday. Instagram mentioned the
meme as its top favorite one.
Rest of Instagram’s favorite memes included the ones made by
certain accounts like @drunkstrology, @sainthoax, @cthagof, @bennydrama, and @theshaderoom.
The company also mentioned a few more accounts that made memes specifically targeting
the 2020 elections held in November. The accounts mentioned were @chnge, @reaction._.pics,@jfirstaman,
@whitepeoplehumor, @complex, and @berniesanders.
Instagram also took the opportunity to acknowledge that its platform doesn’t just serve as a medium to share sarcasm and humor, but is also used positively for the purpose of educating people about certain important topics, such as the Black Lives Matter movement, whose slogan was recently trending over the internet. The company credited some of the accounts that particularly contributed to this act: @intersectionalenviromentalist, @shityoushouldcareabout, @theconsiouskid, and @soyouwanttotalkabout.
