India was under immense shortage of toilets prior to
Narendra Modi becoming Prime Minister. It was an issue that resonated in the
world and was made a laughing stock by many people. Just under 40 percent of
the population had access to the household toilets. It was a problem in the
country with over a billion population.
However, in the later days, India’s Prime Minister, Narendra
Modi, made promises and invested a lot of money towards the “Clean India”
project. This campaign was solely started to revolutionize the toilet situation
in India. The campaign was launched on October 2, 2014 with a strong goal of eliminating
open defecation and manual scavenging as soon as within five years.
Fast forwarding to 2020, the campaign has been successful. The
Indian Prime Minister announced to the world that India has progressed in its toilet-building
revolution. He stated that India is now free of open defecation with 110
million toilets built in the past five years. Over 600 million people have
access to them.
