With Donald Trump losing the 2020 US Presidential Elections and Joe Biden taking his place in office, Twitter will be taking away Trump's privileges that he had been enjoying on the platform. The company confirmed that Trump’s Twitter account will be subject to all the rules like a regular Twitter user’s account, including bans over spreading violent content and false information about voting or the coronavirus.

Twitter has a separate set of rules for accounts owned by world leaders, office candidates and public officials. Problematic tweets posted by leaders and public officials become subject to warning labels or limited engagement. When world leaders and candidates for office no longer hold their positions, their accounts become subject to the regular policies.

However, according to Twitter world leaders can still face enforcement in exclusive scenarios, such as promoting terrorism, making direct threats of violence against an individual, posting someone’s private information, posting personal photos or videos of someone without their consent, engaging in child sexual exploitation behavior, or encouraging self-harm.

Trump, unlike his predecessor Barack Obama who was also an active Twitter user, often engaged in problematic behavior on Twitter, by posting incorrect information or attacking or making violent or inappropriate remarks. As a result, Twitter restricted his posts several times, but didn’t take them down.

Not only Twitter, but Facebook has also had to add warning labels to Trump’s posts since the night of elections, after the president made baseless allegations and false claims regarding the process of voting.
