Did you know that vehicle accidents cause 1.35 million deaths around the globe on average per year? In the US the small state of West Virginia has the highest rate of fatal auto accidents with 90.3 deaths per 100,000 people.
This map shows how states rank across the United States in terms of deaths due to car crashes. It also shows that despite only accounting for 60% of the world's registered vehicles, lower and middle-income countries make up more then 90% of the world's traffic deaths. This could be due to poor road conditions, vehicle malfunctions, distracted driving, driving under the influence or driving with too much speed. The fatal crash rate is a staggering 3 times higher in lower income countries then higher income countries as well.
The Insurance Information Institute reports that speed related crashes cost Americans over 40 billion dollars a year. Just some things to think about for the next time you get behind the wheel.
