Nobel prize awards started in 1901 with a vast variety of categories. Since its inception, only 6 percent of women have been lucky enough to be awarded the most honorable award. This year, the Nobel Prize has been awarded to eleven people, out of which only four happen to be women. However, the ratio this year is miraculously higher than any other year from the past.
Louis Gluck, an American poet, won the Nobel Prize in literature last Thursday and has become the 16th woman to receive an award in literature. The first-ever woman to win a Nobel Prize was Marie Curie and also the first woman to receive the award twice. In total, there are only 57 women to win the Nobel Prize; most of them got the prize for their exceptional work in literature and peace.
The categories in which women received the least awards are Physics and Economics. According to the infographic attached below, only four out of 216 women won Nobel Prizes in Physics whereas, two out of 84 women received it in Economics.
The number of women Nobel laureates have increased in recent decades as compared to the previous ones. In the past two decades, i.e., 2001-2020, 28 women have been awarded the most prestigious award. While on the other hand, from 1981-2000, the women winners were eleven in total and as few as seven in years between 1961-1980.
