Spotify just updated its iPhone and iPad app with a new home screen widget after a brief beta testing period. The new home screen widget provides quick access to recently played playlists, artists, albums, and podcasts.
The widget is available in both small and medium sizes and can be accessed by updating the Spotify app to version 8.5.80 or later.
To bring the widget to your home screen, you simply need to tap and hold any widget or an empty area on the home screen until the app icons start jiggling. Then by tapping on the plus sign on the top left corner, you can choose Spotify from the list and select the size of its widget to add it to the home screen.
You must have iOS 14 or iPadOS 14 in order to access the widget.
One important thing to consider is that the widget will only serve as a shortcut to various parts of the Spotify app, as Apple does not allow home screen widgets to offer playback controls or toggles to avoid interfering with battery life.
