A Chinese-owned app called Tuber has just been launched, that allows access to domestically banned content on Western social media sites like YouTube. The app apparently is the first product of a Chinese tech firm that is allowing users to bypass the Great Firewall.
The Chinese cybersecurity firm that has launched the app is called Qihoo 360 and it is the biggest tech firm in the country.
Tuber is not yet available for download on Apple’s App Store, but has been downloaded millions of times from other sites.
Proxy apps like Tuber are not uncommon in China, as the VPN service in the country is heavily relied on for accessing sites like Facebook and Google. The capability of this particular app, however, to allow bypassing the Great Firewall is something big.
The feedback from some users suggests that Tuber’s functionality is slow. The company has not yet provided any response on the feedback.
To use Tuber, the user is required to register on the app with their personal information including their real name, ID card number, and other details.
