COVID-19 has spread like wildfire across the world. The US
is currently on the top of the chart of coronavirus cases in the world. There
are more than 5 million cases in the US, and it is continuing to spread.
As this unforeseen circumstance got to us, the prison
situation of coronavirus got mostly overlooked. The prison is a cramped space
with loads of prisoners in unsanitary conditions; it was bound that one or two
may contract the virus and spread it. Nearly 80,000 prisoners across the US
have contracted the coronavirus in both federal and state prisons. The virus
has claimed the lives of 766 prisoners, whereas half of them have successfully
recovered.
Not just the prisoners, but the prison staff was also
exposed to it, and the data as of July 28thsuggests that around 18,000 of the
prison staff have contracted the virus, and has claimed the lives of 55 of
them.
