Every year, an increase in the use of digital technology is noticed, but in 2020, when we have just entered the second half of the year, an increase of 30% in internet traffic has been recorded. Moreover, Covid-19 pandemic is a major factor in the drastic increase. Lockdowns have been lifted in several countries around the world, but the digital habits that people adapted during the phase have resulted in achieving various yet important milestones.
The top news to be shared is that the number of social media users has increased by 10% compared to the past years. By the start of July 2020, the number of social media users worldwide rose up to 3.96 billion, which is more than half of the world’s population. As per the growth trends, an average of 1+ million people joined social media each day for the first time in the past 12 months. This counts the joining of 12 new users per second.
If we talk about internet users, in contrast to the past year, the number of people who came online for the first time was recorded as 346 million. Now, almost 60% (4.57 billion people) of the world’s total population use the internet.
Shedding light to the growth of mobile users, which have grown by 2.4% since the previous year. The rate, however, got declined to 0.5% during the first three months of 2020. The slower pace is believed to be due to the Covid-19 lockdowns in several countries, especially in China, which is a massive contributor to global growth.
