Google announced on Monday that it is extending the timeline to end support for Chrome apps, which the company had planned to wind down back in 2016. Chrome apps can be installed in Chrome and work similarly to apps that can be launched from the desktop.
Chrome apps are, however, not widely adopted and according to Google, only 1% of Mac, Windows, and Linux users actively use Chrome packaged apps.
Earlier this year, Google had announced that the apps would be disabled for Mac, Windows, and Linux and set a deadline for June 2020 that it didn't really follow through. The company now says that Chrome apps will work till June 2021. Support for Chrome apps on the relative platforms has, therefore, been given another year. Furthermore, for Chrome OS users, the company is extending the deadline till June 2022.
Making extensions is one of the options that Google recommends as an alternative for developers who need to transition away from Chrome apps now and yet want to provide similar functionality within the Chrome browser.
