In the United States, the dairy industry has seen quite a transformation in the past 30 years. Where small and large dairy farms have been establishing their place in the industry, small independent dairy farmers have been struggling. What makes the struggle even more overwhelming is that majority of these small farmers are close to retiring.
These large farms bring their own advantages to the table, which is why they are being accepted so widely. Ever since the introduction of these megafarms, the dairy industry has witnessed a revolution. The revolution has been so much that although the actual number of dairy farms has gone down, the milk production has only been doubled.
But these mega-milk industries can also come to a halt if protested against by consumers. This very step can perhaps give the ray of hope small farmers need. However, it is still the smaller farms that have been suffering. Many of them have completely shut down, and more are expected to be completely closed in the coming years. Have a look at the infographic below to learn about the gradual transformation of the dairy industry in the United States.
