There is a huge competition amongst the social media applications on both i.e., the PlayStore and AppStore. However, if we talk about PlayStore specifically, the Twitter installs on PlayStore have reached the milestone of one billion installs. There are so many other applications with over millions of downloads such as, back in 2014, Google Play Services was the first amongst every application on PlayStore to reach one billion installs. Earlier in 2019, many apps such as Microsoft Word, Excel and OneDrive were some to reach this milestone.
Twitter serves as one of the major news platforms and hence engages billions of people from all around the globe. Either it is political news, hot gossips about famous celebrities, educational news, entertainment, sports or world affairs, people spend several hours scrolling their Twitter feed. Twitter has also become a platform to raise your voice against certain acts; for example, in the case of George Floyde’s murder, the entire Twitter family came forward to protest against it and win justice for him. Covid-19 precautionary campaigns also took place on Twitter. The power of social media is enormous, and the new trend of hashtags has made it a lot easier to make a piece of news/information viral in no time.
In the United States alone, around 140,000 Twitter installs are counted, and during the first four months of 2020, around 33 million active users were the Americans. Only a single install is counted when it is downloaded on a device once. Now, if that user uninstalls and then reinstall the application, it won’t be counted as another one. However, if the person changes their smartphone and installs the application, it would be counted as another install.
The slower downloading pace of Twitter was due to its part in the third-party developer ecosystem. But, in 2018, Twitter changed its Application Programming Interface (API), and since then, a notable increase in Twitter downloads was observed.
The drastic increase in Twitter downloads has made the developers launch new updates in the app for enhanced running. One of the great updates that Twitter made was the introduction of Progressive Web Application (PWA), which transforms a web page into a mobile application. This effective update has impressed and attracted thousands of users from all over the world.
