For nearly 40 years, the Empire State Building in New York, NY held the title of world’s tallest building. Skyscrapers have advanced so much since it was completed in 1931 that the Empire State Building is no longer even one of the five tallest buildings in New York City. As other countries raced to construct what could be dubbed the tallest building in the world, many interesting skyscrapers and structures were built. Many of the groundbreaking high-rise buildings of the past are dwarfed by the luxury towers of modern times.

While there are some older buildings on the list, the vast majority of the world’s tallest buildings were constructed within the last 20 years.
