For many students, sports are a big part of the high school experience. For the 2018-2019 school year, there were more than 7.9 million participants in high school sports across the United States, proving that sports are still an extremely popular extracurricular activity for high school students across America.

This infographic from AAA State of Play analyzes the most popular sports in each state for both boys and girls and ranks the top two high school sports for each gender. Also, the data is based on the National Federation of State High School Associations. For boys in America, it's safe to say that football is easily the most popular sport. It's actually the most popular sport for boys in 43 of the 50 states, with more than one million male students playing the sport during the 2018-2019 school year. During the same time frame, the most popular sport for girls was track and field with over 488,000 participants.
