Maternal mental health is a serious issue that is overlooked by medical staff and ultimately leads to almost 20 expecting or new moms to end their own lives annually in the United Kingdom. 1 out of 5 women start facing mental breakdowns during their pregnancy or right after having a baby. However, 7 out of 10 women pretend to be normal and hide their mental stress during pregnancy due to a lack of awareness of therapies.
Conditions like postpartum psychosis, chronic serious mental illness, severe depressive illness, post-traumatic stress disorder, anxiety issues, distress, and adjustment issues are pretty common among pregnant women or new mothers.
Many women lack support from their families or closed ones and have no one to share their hearts out with. Also, there is no proper awareness regarding maternal mental health, which makes women end up in severe stress and harm themselves.
Women should be counseled about maternal mental illness during their routine checkups while pregnant so that if they come across such situations, they are pretty much sure where to head to.
