The history of marathons dates back to the period of ancient civilisations. Many people are also aware of the fact that the Olympics has also been derived from the ancient world, namely Ancient Greece. So both the Olympics and racing marathons have come to us this far, all the way from Greece.
Having so much historical importance, just running in a marathon is a pretty big thing in itself. Let alone if you win it, then the euphoric feeling of being on top of the world is like icing on the cake. Since a marathon is no ordinary race, it takes a very, very long time to reach the finish line.
The greatest marathons that we have today, have all seen winners reaching the finish line in about two hours or more. These have taken place in various parts of the world and modern marathons started around in the 19th century.
Have a look below at the seven greatest marathons worldwide, along with their respective winners and other statistics.
